Immigration doesn't stop at permanent residence. As a permanent resident, you are not allowed to vote or run for political office or hold some jobs that need a high-level security clearance.
There are several requirements you will have to satisfy in order to meet the eligibility requirements to qualify for Canadian citizenship. To become a Canadian citizen, generally you must be a permanent resident and have been physically present in Canada for three out of the last five years (1095 days).
To be eligible for citizenship, applicants are required to meet their tax filing obligations under the Income Tax Act for the appropriate, relevant period. For applications received on or after October 11, 2017, three of the taxation years that fall fully or partially within the five years immediately before the date of application.
If you are between the ages of 18 and 54 you will have to satisfy the language requirements and pass the citizenship test. To be successful, you must be familiar with the rights and responsibilities of citizens and have a basic knowledge of Canada's geography, political system, and history.
No one's situation is the same. You must submit fingerprints as part of the application, as certain criminal convictions may prevent you from becoming a citizen of Canada.
