Employer-Specific Work Permits

An employer-specific work permit allows a foreign national to work in Canada for a particular employer under the conditions set out on the work permit. Unlike an open work permit, it generally identifies the employer, occupation, work location, and the period of authorized employment. Depending on the circumstances, an employer-specific work permit may require a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), while others are exempt under Canada’s International Mobility Program, international agreements, or specific public policies.

Understanding which work permit applies to your situation is important. Choosing the wrong application type can lead to unnecessary delays or refusals. Whether you are an employer looking to hire a foreign worker or an individual who has received a job offer in Canada, selecting the appropriate work permit pathway is the first step toward a successful application.

Francophone Mobility

The Francophone Mobility Program allows eligible employers outside Quebec to hire certain French-speaking foreign nationals without first obtaining a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
